“Life is a matter of courtship and wooing, flirting and chatting.” – Carolyn See
Wooing and courtship may sound like outdated terms, but some good old fashioned romance can go a long way when it comes to getting a person to reciprocate the feelings you have for them. And wooing isn’t something only men have to do. Those days are long gone and irrespective of your gender, you can make the first move and express your interest. While you may not want to march up to that person and tell them outright about your feelings, you can show them that you are attracted to them in many different ways and get them to fall for you at the same time.
1. Start Talking
Approaching someone can be a nerve-wracking experience, but you need to tell yourself that you can do it. Figure out how to start a conversation with the person you’re interested in and keep it going. Always be polite and courteous when you’re talking to them and if you’re confident enough, you can even start flirting a little. Keep things light and interesting at first and you can move on to deeper topics later.
2. Pay Attention
Listen to what that person has to say and get to know them properly. They’ll appreciate the fact that you’re paying attention to them and you can use the time to find out more about what makes them tick. This will also come in handy later because you’ll learn more about their likes and dislikes, hobbies, and passions. So when you want to plan something for the two of you, you won’t be completely lost.
3. Small Gestures
Grand romantic gestures like showing up outside their window with a boom box playing ‘Can’t Help Falling In Love’ are all very well and good, but they’re not all that matters. Try and do little things everyday that you know will make that person smile. This shows them that you are listening to their needs and that you care enough to look after them. It can be as simple as getting them their favourite drink after a hard day at work or picking up a book they’ve wanted to read for a while.
4. Be Around
Sometimes, the best way to show that you care is by simply showing up when that person needs you. While it is important for you to focus on your education and career, take out time to show the person that they are a priority in your life and that you’re willing to move things around just to be there with them. You’ll make them feel loved and you’ll get the added bonus of being able to spend more time with them. Even if you can’t be physically present, show them that you’re thinking of them by checking in through a text message now and then.
5. Lend A Helping Hand
Everybody could use some help now and then and you can make your intentions very clear by helping out when they need assistance. This will also endear you to that person. Show them that you’re doing this because you care for them. Just be there when they need someone to help with chores or run an errand or even help with studying. This is also another opportunity to spend more time with that person.
6. Be Patient
Love doesn’t always happen at first sight no matter what the movies might be telling you. Sometimes it happens, but more often than not, it takes time. You need to put in effort with that person to foster the spark but all of it will be worth it if they return your feelings. This also doesn’t mean that you should smother them with your attention. Give them their space and take a relaxed approach. Let them have their time to think and sort out their own feelings.
Rejection happens. That is a given. Not everyone you have feelings for will return those feelings. You can’t force love to happen so when someone says no, don’t give them a hard time about it. Hope for the best and if worst comes to worst, you’ll end up making a very good friend.
